Today is the one month anniversary of the murder of Trayvon Martin, and this past month has been filled with outrage and sorrow not just for his family but for our country. Trayvon Martin, an African American teen, was killed while walking in a gated community. His murderer, a self appointed white neighborhood watchman named George Zimmerman, is still walking free and has yet to be arrested. Zimmerman told police that he felt threatened by Martin because he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, he looked like he was on drugs, and because he had his hands in his pocket. The facts of this case are: 1. When Zimmerman called the police he told them that Martin wasn’t bothering him, but yet he still made the decision to follow the teen and intimidate him. 2. A woman who lived in the neighborhood called the police as she heard and saw the teen crying out for help followed by a gunshot. 3. When the police arrived they found Zimmerman with minor bruises, but he didn’t go to the hospital. 4. When they found the body of Martin all he had on him was a pack of skittles, an Arizona iced tea, and his I-phone. 5. The police appear to be protecting Zimmerman by with holding his criminal records, and refusing to hear the accounts of the witnesses to the crime scene.
They have also been reporting irrelevant stories about the
teenager to demonize his character and to make Zimmerman appear good to the public eye. Fortunately, everyone still thinks Zimmerman is a monster. Since this night people have been coming together and speaking out to support the Trayvon Martin case, including Rev. Al Sharpton, Spike Lee and more. At this point it’s not just about defending the black race or the white race, it’s about having respect for the human race. Zimmerman killed an innocent, unarmed young man. He took a child away from his parents, and he acted out of false fear, as heard in the video. I have never known a pack of skittles to be used as a weapon, and the fact that Zimmerman thought this was a valid excuse isn‘t even the sad part. The law enforcement who are defending Zimmerman‘s stupid excuse are even more disgusting then Zimmerman himself. How are we to feel united or safe in a country when someone can justify killing an unarmed child. This coward should be arrested and put in the worst type of prison, until then we can only show support for this young man’s family. Some ways to do this would be posting a photo in a hooded sweatshirt, tweeting #justice4trayvon,sending cards and well wishes to his family/ Trayvon Martin foundation, and more. Every kind word or thought helps.
